5:16 pm
to our weather. check this out. these are all tornado watches that you're looking at. look at a wide swath of the middle of the country. not only watches, but there are some tornado warnings that are in effect as well and not only that, you see them down here as well as parts of western ohio, parts of western illinois, there is a lot of action on the radar. some very strong storms and very warm and incredibly humid air for this time of year. locally, we've got some fog along the maine-new hampshire coast. dense in spots. 3/4 of a mile at logan. only half a mile at lawrence and barely any visibility in sports sports. then we add the rain that's coming in and it's dark at this time. so be careful. if you're doing late christmas shopping, you will have some the heaviest rains are coming later. at least a few hours from now. the swath goes, heavy rain from southwestern connecticut all the way on down to the nation's
5:17 pm
today, certainly not a cold day but a little bit cooler than yesterday. the record-breaking warmth that's coming tomorrow, but leading it in is this wall of water that's coming in with some really heavy downpours later on tonight that could contain some under and lightning, of course, and then in the wee hours of the morning, last of those heavy downpours will move offshore. tomorrow, we're still going to be left as we start christmas eve with a lot of clouds and dense fog, northern mass, southern new hampshire and southern maine. i'm not sure if we'll get much in the way of sunshine tomorrow but fine we don't we'll still be very warm. >> this is just one computer model estimate of rainfall. a swath why you to the west of boston. a half an inch to an inch closer to boston. that's an estimate, but again, these heavy downpours could be slightly shifted in location and could be even localized amounts of two inches, would not shock me. look at this. this is city cam. can't see much. of course, it's dark but you know when it's clear ow.
5:18 pm
can't see virtually any of that now because of the dense fog that's moving in. the wind is right off the water. it's 48 degrees. just about a matching dew point means the air is saturated in the lower part of the afternoon. so what about this warmth? it's only 48 in boston. right now we have an easterly wind. but tomorrow the wind will shift behind that rain and the warm front, and that will usher in the warmth that's down the coast like the 72 carolina. late tonight towards tomorrow morning we'll actually see the temperatures rise from boston southward but it will remain cool across southern new hampshire and southern maine until late tomorrow morning or midday there. as far as tomorrow is concerned, i think we have a shot at approaching or touching 70 degrees. that's predicated on a few breaks of sun. if we don't get that we'll still be in the 60's and that will still break the record because the record high tomorrow in worcester is only 57 so that should get shattered. boston, 61 and that will get
5:19 pm
after we go through christmas eve and move toward christmas clearing. might be some high, thin clouds christmas day. a touch cooler than tomorrow but very mild. check out the next seven days. record warmth tomorrow and there is christmas day. by the way you may have forgotten this but we actually hit 59, even though it was in the wee hours of the morning just last year on christmas but then look at the years prior. certainly more typical of the kind of temperatures you would x. but not this time around. saturday is cooler with some damp weather returning. sunday will be right near the boundary of the cool and warm with a few showers so 50s to near 60's south of boston. 40's to the north. colder air comes in on monday. very different and we may have some type of a wintry mix around the region tuesday. so that's certainly going to be a shocking change to our systems at that time. phil?
